Reappearance: GTD and Links Galore · Thursday June 14, 2007

Well, I somehow managed to complete a 6000 word essay on ‘cyberspace’ and technological determinism, a 6000 word essay about Christian Nord and Bio Mapping, a 3000 word paper critiquing Derrida and digital archiving, another 3000 word essay on the ideological function of moral panics, and finally, 3000 words on how media have shaped our senses of time and space in modernity. Mehhhhhhhhhhhh.

I also performed some Real work for Real people:
The Nag launched a couple of weeks ago, which is an ongoing Anti Apathy project to help people do one thing a month for the planet. I implemented the front end of the site (illustrated by Rick from Flo-Creative); awesome Rails dudes Hamza and Jens built the complicated stuff. I learned all about using Subversion and a tiny bit about how a Rails framework works. Plus, people switching to green energy through The Nag are already saving about 98 tonnes of C02 emissions every year! How exciting/soothing for my guilty liberal Protestant conscience.

The first issue of Veneer Magazine is out. Conceived of and edited by my dear friend Aaron Flint Jamison and published by my other dear friends at Marriage Records, Veneer Magazine has no focus. The website is a collaborative and continuing effort between myself, Luke, Jona, and Flint. There is no content management system. Pages are “lovingly” hand-coded. There are secrets to be had here; view source is your friend.

Built a new front-end design for The People Speak. “The People Speak develops ideas, technologies and strategies for bringing people together to have conversations and discussions in an open-ended and fun way. We design events, architectures, systems and processes in which people are encouraged to express themselves, share ideas, flirt, and be as creative as they can.” All good things, right?

Currently working on a lovely new site for Marriage Records in collaboration with Flint and Jona. Philip’s been making good progress on a new site for Flux Lights, and I’ve been doing bits and pieces here and there for Open Business / Creative Commons UK.

Oh yeah! My friend Gavin has been working his butt off on Rememble and it’s currently in beta. Looks to be quite cool, a unique (and good-looking) take on the digital social/individual archive.

Waferbaby is back.

Facebook is as addictive as everybody says it is, IMHO. IMHO, the acronym IMHO is also addictive. Twitter, too. Also Last.fm

Other Upcoming Events of Note:
For all the Irish readers of Digital Hearth (currently there are 0 of you, according to Google Analytics), I’m playing a solo show with Goodtime John on Sunday, June 24th at Whelan’s in Dublin, Ireland. GTD with GTJ!

THEN, I’ll be back in the Northwest from July 5th-July 26th. Tentative schedule: July 5th-11th in Vancouver, BC, July 11th-18th in Portland, July 18th-23rd in Anacortes (HECK FEST!), and then back to Vancouver for the last few days. Drop me a line if you’d like to get a coffee or a beer or go for a hike or watch a show during that time.

THEN, I’m playing with Mt. Eerie in London on August 1st at fancy-pants Bush Hall. With band! More info available at Upset The Rhythm. Hey, Laura Veirs is playing the night before at the same venue! MAKE IT A TWOSOME, THAT WILL BE HOTTTT! Hmm, I guess a twosome isn’t that hot. But still fun, right?

Things That I’ve Recently Lost
Mobile phone (left on stage at Gramaphone, disappeared, apparently went on a little tour around England with Adrian…now my friend Ninian has it. Weird.)
7000 songs on an external hard drive (click of death)
Thousands of songs on a 40gb iPod (ditto)

Now, about that dissertation…
